Lifting of US Sanctions Turbocharges Syria Domain Registration

DAMASCUS: The Syria domain registration activities have picked up momentum with the US lifting its sanctions on the country. Businesses and individuals across the world can now register the ‘.SY’ domain names.

The registration of domain names in Syria has been previously restricted due to the sanctions imposed by the US. The US President Donald J Trump recently issued an executive order revoking the Syria sanctions, enabling companies and entrepreneurs to secure the ‘.SY’ domain name.

Businesses will be able to establish a local and global digital footprint by leveraging the free access to Syria domain registration services.

Syria domain registration is now being facilitated through both domestic and international registrars. Regional news outlets, tech firms, e-commerce startups, and diaspora-run initiatives aiming to reconnect with local audiences are expected to utilise the Syria internet domain launch.

Beyond business branding, the move holds broader economic and symbolic significance. Open access to ‘.SY’ domains could strengthen Syria’s position in the global digital marketplace and encourage international companies to revisit investment opportunities in the region.

The ‘.SY’ domain is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of Syria. It is an Internet top-level domain that countries use for their identification.

However, the importance of ccTLDs goes beyond identification. They play a critical role in content localisation, improving Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) for local businesses, and building trust among the regional users.

The beginnings of ccLTDs can be traced back to the 1980s, with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) regulating their allocation.

According to a Wikipedia article, ccTLDs constituted around 40% of all domain registrations as of 2022. However, ccTLD registrations have increased over the years.

As per the latest report by Domain Name Industry Brief (DNIB), the first quarter of 2025 ended with 368.4 million domain name registrations, with ccTLDs accounting for 142.9 million registrations.
