EGYPT

A signatory to the Paris Convention and to the Madrid Convention of 1954, Egypt has long been a proponent of intellectual property rights. Egypt has adopted the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks under the Nice Agreement and has been a member of the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks since the Act of Stockholm of 1967. Egypt joined WIPO in 1975.

General Information

Works Protected:	Literary works, Reference works, Computer software and databases, Artistic works Architectural Works, Geographical Maps and Technical Drawings, Engineering Plans, and layouts.
Type of Applicant:	Company, Individual or Jointly.
Related Rights:	Performers, Producers of sound recordings and Broadcasting Organizations.
Term of Protection:	50 years after the author’s death.
Time Frames (Up To):	Registration: 4 months.
Infringement Measures:	Warning, Confiscation of all copies, Damages, Fine, Imprisonment and Closing the violating establishment.

Filing Requirements:

• Power of Attorney duly legalized up to Egypt Consulate. (Required at the time of filing)
• Declaration from the author to the applicant signed by both parties duly legalized as above if the applicant is not the author.
• Certificate indicating the registration of the work of art and the registration data in Egypt or any foreign country.
